Why are vaccinations important for adults?
Getting vaccinated is crucial for adults to maintain immunity against various diseases.
As we age, the protection from previous vaccinations can decrease, and new vaccines may be
needed to prevent illnesses that are more common in adulthood. Vaccines help protect not
only the individual but also the community, especially those who are more vulnerable, such as
babies, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
Keeping up to date with vaccinations can prevent the spread of diseases and contribute to
community immunity.
- SHINGLES – Shingles are caused by varicella-zoster, the same virus that causes
chickenpox. If you’ve ever had chickenpox (typically during childhood), this virus is
quietly hiding out in the roots of your nerves. It can reactivate and cause a painful skin
rash. This is known as shingles or herpes zoster. Most people who get shingles are 50
years of age or older, but it can happen at any age. - RSV(Respiratory Syncytial Virus) – Help protect your lungs with the RSV vaccine. The RSV
vaccine is approved for adults ages 50 to 59 who are at increased risk for RSV disease, all
adults aged over 60 and pregnant women from 32 through 36 weeks gestation.
